We've been shortlisted for national ‘Community Achievement’ award
We’ve been shortlisted in the ‘Community Achievement’ category of this year’s 24 Housing Awards for a project we run for young people in Wellington.
This project, called a ‘Dreamscheme’, is a youth initiative which gives young people at Westford Grange in Wellington the opportunity to get involved in their local community. The young people decide on community work they’d like to do and for the time spent doing the work they receive points. They can redeem the points for rewards they’ve chosen, like day trips or parties.
Among the activities held so far, young people have created a community mosaic, painted pictures for the local nursing home residents, and planted bulbs as part of Wellington in Bloom.
Jane Edmonds, our Assistant Director said, ‘Westford Grange is a rural estate of 70 homes. There’s not much space for young people to play outside, and as a result there were anti-social behaviour issues when we took ownership of the homes in late 2011.
We’ve worked with Avon & Somerset Police since January 2012 to hold regular activities with the young people on the estate and anti-social behaviour is now down significantly. We regularly have over 20 children coming to every session.’
The young people from Westford Grange star in our film, ‘Little Castles’, which shows how the Dreamscheme has impacted on them and their community - watch here (from 3:24 minutes).
The awards ceremony takes place on Thursday 6 November in Birmingham.
