Planning secured for new retirement complex and homes for people with learning difficulties in Taunton

05 February 2015

We've secured planning permission to build 66 Extra Care apartments for over 55s and 12 assisted living apartments for people with learning difficulties, at Parmin Close in Taunton.

All the homes will be affordable, with 68 for rent and 10 for shared ownership, meeting the need for more affordable housing in the area.

The development will provide older people and those with learning difficulties with their own, self-contained homes and enable them to live independently, with assistance from us.

Four of the assisted living apartments will be specially designed to give wheelchair users full access and flexible living.

The scheme will also offer its own communal facilities to increase community involvement. There will be a communal café and lounge areas to provide residents and the wider community with a place to socialise and enjoy cooked meals.

This follows a study by the Smith Institute into housing associations’ readiness for an ageing population, which suggests that many housing associations are unprepared to meet the needs of an additional half a million tenants aged over 65.

Mike Day, our Director of Development and Homeownership said, ‘Affordable housing is vital in Somerset and we’re really pleased to be able to announce these plans to deliver 78 new homes in Taunton.

Supported housing for older people and for those with learning difficulties is an important priority for housing associations. As a sector, we need to ensure we’re doing more to provide modern, appropriate facilities to meet the varied needs of these residents and to support them to live independently.’
