Community in Taunton enjoys afternoon of sports

16 April 2015

Over 50 young people and their families enjoyed a community sports afternoon in Taunton on Friday, which we organised in partnership with Cheddon Fitzpaine Parish Council.

The event took place in Stoney Furlong and was attended by Taunton’s Mayor Dave Durdan and Mayoress. The afternoon began with the official opening of a new community sports locker filled with sports equipment for local people to use.

This was followed by sports activities for the community to try out, including rush hockey, football and Frisbee golf, run by 1610 and Mendip Outdoor Pursuits.

The Parish Council funded the sports equipment. We donated the locker as part of our ‘Creating Active Communities’ programme, a three-year partnership project funded by Sport England to help more young people and adults take part in fun and healthy sports activities in Somerset.

Jane Edmonds, our Assistant Director, said “The sports afternoon was a huge success and we had a fantastic turn out. Knightstone takes building strong and healthy communities seriously. So we’re working with local residents and other organisations across Somerset to develop sports provision in communities where we also provide homes.

Through Creating Active Communities we’re giving people the chance to try new activities, enjoy the benefits of regular sports exercise, and experience what’s available locally.”

Jo Pearson, Parish Clerk at Cheddon Fitzpaine Parish Council, said “We’d like to pay particular thanks to retiring County Councillor Claire Gordon who introduced the Parish Council to Knightstone officers to start this project in Stoney Furlong, and for obtaining the Health and Well Being Grant which is being used for the benefit of this area.”

We're now looking to hold regular sports sessions in Stoney Furlong as part of the Creating Active Communities programme, including rounders, circuit training and football sessions.
