If you or a member of your family is having trouble in their home due to a health condition, a disability, or their age, then our Aids and Adaptations team may be able to help.

Minor adaptations

We can supply and fit minor adaptations for our customers such as grab rails, lever taps, key safes and handrails. Our customers are not expected to pay for this service.

Please note, however, that we cannot provide freestanding equipment such as bath mats, stools, can openers, or adaptations for mobility scooters.

We will aim to provide our customers with their adaptation within 28 calendar days, although there is a fast-track system available for more urgent requests, such as hospital discharges.

The following links can be used to request adaptations (for repairs, please use our report a repair tool):

Major adaptations

For adaptations such as over-bath showers, level-access showers, ramps or lifts, our customers should contact their local authority for an occupational therapist assessment. Find your local adult social care service here.

An occupational therapist will usually visit customers in their homes to carry out an assessment of their needs. Alternatively, customers may be invited to attend a local assessment centre. If a major adaptation is considered as ‘necessary and appropriate’ then the occupational therapist will refer customers to their local authority for a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG). The local authority will then arrange the adaptation.

Disabled Facilities Grants are means tested for adults - therefore, the outcome may mean that some customers are asked to contribute towards their adaptation. Children under 18 years of age are exempt from the means test.
