A local community group has been recognised in our Community Stars competition, for its extraordinary acts of kindness over Christmas last year.

Avonmouth Projects Group braved three nights of cold and rain in early December to spread some festive cheer to over a thousand children in the Shirehampton, Sea Mills, Coombe Dingle and Lawrence Weston communities.

A spokesperson for Avonmouth Projects Group, said: “We are all so grateful to have had our hard work recognised, and I think the idea of these awards is brilliant.

“Last year was tough for everybody and we are glad we could spread cheer to over 1700 children last Christmas.”

From house to house, the group walked more than 20 miles over three nights and gave gifts to children. Dressed up as Santa, Mrs Clause, a snowman, the grinch and a donkey – they brought some much-needed cheerfulness at a time when everyone needed it.

Avonmouth Projects Group is one of two groups that have been named winners in the competition’s community groups category. They will each receive £100 prize money.

The group’s spokesperson added: “This prize money will go towards gifts to be given out during Christmas 2021.”

Aaron Simpson, a local community member, nominated Avonmouth Projects Group for the Community Stars award.

Aaron said: “Avonmouth Projects Group gave up many evenings to walk around the local villages in the wind and rain to make a difference in the community and, to prepare, plan and raise money to pay for everything.

“I followed them around Sea Mills and seeing so many families outside their houses waiting for Santa to come along, made me realise how much people needed some cheer.

“I am really pleased they have been recognised and rewarded, as hopefully, it will show them that the community appreciate their efforts.”

Our Community Stars awards were launched in January to recognise unsung heroes who go to extraordinary lengths to benefit our communities. The awards are run on a quarterly basis and are open to individuals and community groups.
