Slow cookers save money and provide nutritious meals for Okehampton community

50 people living on lower incomes in Okehampton have been given slow cookers as part of a project to make healthy meals more achievable and boost both physical and mental health.

Working alongside Okehampton Community Kitchen CIC we have provided 50 slow cookers to eligible families along with cookery books, a starter herbs and spice pack and access to online group support for sharing recipes and asking advice.

Lyndsey a local resident using the slow cooker project said: “I use my slow cooker daily, especially in school holidays and I've started cooking things I'd never gave tried before. I'm saving electricity too.”

Local business 3 East Street has kindly donated vegetables and a local farm has donated meat.

Alison Knight, Community Connector at LiveWest said: “There are families within the area who potentially have insufficient household income to provide nutritional fresh food, so the slow cooker project will be of considerable benefit to them.”

“Families are assessed according to need and the slow cookers will help lower bills and provide nutritional food so will be of considerate benefit to them.”

Rebecca Green from Okehampton Community Kitchen CIC said: “Food for children was affected during recent lockdowns in the pandemic so we have a primary focus on boosting community resilience and helping families and individuals learn new skills to support themselves.”

“Our project targets all ages by offering a flexible package of slow cookers based on size of family,
age and ability. This project has so many benefits. From being safer for the elderly than an oven to supporting those with mobility issues better than using a hob and oven to saving a fortune on electricity and increasing nutrition in diets. We are so grateful to LiveWest for previous support.”

Those interested in getting involved in the project can contact Rebecca Green at Okehampton Community Kitchen CIC on 07806 770926 for an opportunity to gain a level 2 food hygiene certification, safeguarding training and new skills while joining a friendly team.
