Due to the cost of living crisis over recent years, meter tampering has become more common across the country.

Meter tampering is when someone attempts to change or modify their gas or electricity meter to try and stop it recording how much they are using.

Meter tampering is classed as energy theft and can be very dangerous.

Why should you never tamper with your meter?

There are several reasons you should never tamper with your meter.

Most importantly, it is incredibly dangerous. There have been many reports across the country of meter tampering leading to serious fires, including cases where lives have sadly been lost.

Tampering with gas meters can cause gas leaks, which can lead to risk of carbon monoxide poisoning or an explosion.

Meter tampering can be classed as theft and is therefore illegal. It could be punished with a fine of thousands of pounds, and potentially years in prison.

Meter tampering could breach your tenancy, possibly leading to legal action or eviction. Your home insurance could also become invalid. If a fire is caused by meter tampering, your insurance provider may not pay out.

What should you do if you suspect someone has tampered with their meter?

You can anonymously report meter tampering to Stay Energy Safe online or by calling 0800 023 2777.
