Residents at Hornbeam Close in Bradley Stoke are enjoying greater independence in homes designed to help them live on their own terms while receiving support when needed.

Their experiences highlight the importance of supported housing, which is being celebrated through the National Housing Federation's Supported Housing Week campaign this week.

Supported housing helps people overcome challenges such as poor health, learning disabilities and homelessness by providing safe homes alongside tailored support to help them live independently and thrive.

LiveWest operates 102 supported housing schemes and supports more than 1,300 residents, including more than 440 people with disabilities.

The development combines supported living accommodation for people living with disabilities with affordable housing, creating an inclusive community.

Developed by LiveWest in partnership with Milestones Trust and South Gloucestershire Council, the scheme includes accessible homes, communal facilities and shared outdoor space.

Among the residents is James Bennett, who lives in an accessible flat at the scheme and says having his own home has given him the independence he had been looking for.

Our resident, James Bennett, said: “It's a big flat and it's enjoyable to have it. It's a big change living here, but I will get there. It's a nice place to live and that's what it's all about really, independence and getting used to different things.

”I take a lot of care and pride in my flat. I love living in my home because it gives me the independence I've been looking for. It's a place where you can live away from your parents and make your own decisions.

“They're very warm flats and there are plenty of nice people here. It's very friendly. The staff here take a lot of care and look after you, and that's the main thing really.”

Fellow resident Marie Miller says moving to Hornbeam Close has helped her become more independent and feel part of a supportive community.

She said: “I think it's excellent here, it means a lot. I like living here because I've got new friends and there's always something going on.

”It's nice and quiet here and it's made me a bit more independent. I'm doing more things for myself, even though I forget to do the washing sometimes!

“My home is nice and we all help each other. It's great to have a place of your own, and the staff help us but let us do what we want to do.”

The experiences of residents at Hornbeam Close reflect the positive impact supported housing can have.

Previous residents have spoken about moving closer to family, and gaining greater independence through the scheme, highlighting how the right home can help people take positive steps forward in their lives.
