At LiveWest, we are dedicated to Creating Greener Futures Together. We are working with our customers and partners to make sure sustainability is at the heart of our organisation, and to help build healthier futures across our communities.

This month, we’re focusing on how you can shop more sustainably over the festive period. At this time of year, many of us feel pressured to buy lots of food, decorations, and gifts. This can be costly and create a lot of waste. By choosing to shop more sustainably, we can all help the environment, while saving ourselves some money.

Here are a some of our favourite ways to shop sustainably during the festive season:

Quality over quantity

Try to choose good-quality gifts that will last, and that people will really enjoy. Most people appreciate one thoughtful gift more than lots of small items that aren’t very personal. Choosing quality over quantity helps reduce waste – and it can be kinder to your budget too!

Shop locally

Shopping locally usually means less packaging and a lower carbon footprint, as items haven’t travelled as far. You’ll also be supporting your local community. And don’t forget to take a reusable bag for your gifts!

Choose sustainable materials

Avoid unnecessary packaging and single-use plastics (especially glitter) that can’t be recycled. Try to pick gifts or decorations made from sustainable or Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-approved materials. When wrapping presents, use cloth or recyclable paper and string.

Shop second-hand

Visit one of your local vintage or charity shops. Pre-loved clothes, books, and homeware can make thoughtful, one-of-a-kind gifts. You might find something perfect for a friend or family member while giving an item a new home.

Give homemade gifts

Instead of giving an item, you could also offer your time or skills. People often appreciate the effort you put in more and this is much kinder to the environment, and your wallet!

Here are a few ideas you could try:

  • Show off your baking skills with some festive biscuits or cakes.
  • Make a festive wreath or ornament
  • Have a go at making your own jam or chutney.

Reduce, Reuse, Rewear

Instead of buying a new outfit for the party season, wear something you already own, or ask your friends and family if they have anything you could borrow. If you want something new, have a look in your local second-hand shops – you might find some amazing vintage pieces.

We understand how difficult it can be to shop sustainably, especially during the festive season, but every small decision can make a big difference. For more sustainable shopping ideas, visit our Shopping Green Advice page.
