Toby Luce, a Renewable Technology Apprentice at LiveWest, is pursuing a green career after realising the future in green technologies to reduce the planet’s carbon footprint.

For National Apprenticeship Week, we are celebrating our apprenticeships and how we are one of a few housing associations across the country to invest in renewable apprentices.

Toby said: “I think renewable engineering is a great career to get into. The technologies we work with are better for the environment, which is something everyone is becoming increasingly aware of.

“I recommend pursuing a career in renewable energy, particularly as the sector is rapidly growing because of the government’s green energy targets and with the public becoming more aware of green technology alternatives.”

Toby joined LiveWest back in April 2022 and since has gained hands-on experience through working alongside our colleagues and helping our customers.

While doing Thai boxing in his spare time alongside his apprenticeship with us, the 22-year-old is completing his plumbing and heating qualification at Bath College one day a week and spends his other four days on the tools.

He said: “I really recommend doing an apprenticeship with LiveWest as they are such a supportive and friendly organisation to work for.

“They have supported me with my college course, uniform and paying for my travel. I also have regular meetings to check on my progress.”

Whilst building his experience in electrics, gas and plumbing Toby works alongside his mentors to fit efficient central heating, ventilation units, air source heat pumps, lighting, sockets and much more.

He added: “I’m really enjoying my apprenticeship, especially because I am learning a wide range of skills. I also regularly meet different mentors, which has given me a chance to meet new people and network.

“Renewable technology is a big part of the way forward to help reduce our carbon footprint as it harnesses natural energy without producing greenhouse gases.”

As we continue our journey to be net zero by 2050, apprenticeships like Toby’s play a big role in encouraging more people to learn about a greener way of living whilst helping residents with their energy bills.

As LiveWest continues to improve its homes across the region to ensure they become more energy-efficient and sustainable, it offers its apprentices a wide variety of experiences.

Whilst his working day may vary from retirement schemes to lower energy-efficient homes, Toby gains a  also gets to know more residents across LiveWest’s community.

Continuing to learn on the job, Toby looks forward to being a part of the next generation of green technologies and put himself in a good position to advance his career as a renewables engineer.
