We're launching our Slow Cook, Low Waste competition where customers can share their top tips on reducing food waste for a chance to win a slow cooker.

As the cost of living continues to rise, people will be looking for ways to reduce their bills and a good way of doing this is by using alternative cheaper appliances such as a slow cooker and using any leftover food or food that may go in the waste but could still be suitable.

A slow cooker uses less electricity than an oven. Even though it cooks over a long time, it can use less energy than a lightbulb.

LiveWest will be giving away slow cookers to customers who enter the competition and those who share a top tip will be in with a chance of winning. The best ones will be judged and if selected to win, customers will be sent a slow cooker. The competition is being funded and is in partnership with Jewson Partnership Solutions.

Alison Knight, our Community Connector, said: “We’re passionate about making a difference in our communities and we understand that with energy bills going up, this brings added pressure to families, and we would like to support customers where possible.

"The Slow Cook, Low Waste competition has been launched to give customers an alternative method of cooking which is cheaper than an oven and will help with meal preparation.

“Hopefully it can bring people together to share their food waste tips which will be useful going into the winter months when any saving will make a difference.

“It will also be a nice way for people to discover and create some new slow cooker meals and we hope people enjoy taking part.”

Some ideas for reducing food waste could be ways to reuse your leftovers, tips on different food preparation, or sharing freezing ideas for a more sustainable food shop.

This competition follows on from our previous environmental competition where people shared their recycled Christmas decorations and people made their own gifts or upcycled items to put around their homes.

Scott Cooper, Business Director for Jewson Partnership Solutions, said: “It’s fantastic to be able to support an initiative like this.

"The cost of living crisis is something many residents will be feeling and hearing about a lot at the moment, therefore we are delighted to support LiveWest’s Slow Cook, Low Waste competition, to help local residents reduce their energy bills and food waste. Sustainability is high on our own agenda, so this felt like a really nice alignment.”

LiveWest is committed to improving the sustainability of its homes. It has been successful in securing £2m of government funding to improve the energy performance of homes under the government’s Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund.

The Cby28 programme will see us investing approximately £40m into its existing housing and underlines the commitment we have to reduce its carbon footprint and improve the energy efficiency of our homes.

The Slow Cook, Low Waste competition will run from today, 26 September 2022, until 24 October 2022. The competition is open to LiveWest customers across the South West and winners will be contacted after the closing date.

Winners’ top tips will be included in a recipe booklet which will be shared on our website. Please read the terms and conditions and fill out the entry form here to enter.
